Specifically targets shoulder joint stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion through gentle myofascial release, targeted mobilization techniques, and muscle energy techniques (MET). Orthopedic cupping may also be incorporated when appropriate.

Understanding Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes pain, stiffness, and significant restriction in shoulder movement. The shoulder joint is surrounded by a flexible capsule that normally allows the joint to move freely. With frozen shoulder, the capsule becomes inflamed, thickened, and tight, which can make everyday movements increasingly difficult.

Frozen shoulder typically develops through three stages. The stages can overlap, and the experience and timeline can be different for each person.

1. Freezing Stage

The freezing stage is often the most painful. Shoulder pain gradually increases, movement becomes more restricted, and pain may be especially noticeable at night or when trying to sleep. As the shoulder becomes more painful, you may begin avoiding certain movements without even realizing it.

This stage can last several weeks to several months, and in some people considerably longer.

2. Frozen Stage

During the frozen stage, the pain may begin to decrease, but stiffness and loss of movement can become the biggest challenge. Reaching overhead, reaching behind your back, getting dressed, doing your hair, or performing other everyday activities may still be difficult.

This stage can also last for several months.

3. Thawing Stage

During the thawing stage, shoulder movement gradually begins to return. Progress can be slow, but over time many people experience improved mobility and an easier time with daily activities.

Recovery can take months or even years from the beginning of frozen shoulder, so patience is often an important part of the process.

How Long Does Frozen Shoulder Last?

There isn't one exact timeline for frozen shoulder. Some people improve within several months, while others experience symptoms and restricted movement for a year or longer. Some medical resources describe recovery taking up to two or three years in some cases.

If you're experiencing significant shoulder pain or loss of movement, it's important to have your shoulder evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional. Shoulder pain and restricted movement can have many different causes, and not every painful or stiff shoulder is frozen shoulder.

If you have been diagnosed with frozen shoulder, massage may be one part of the support you receive as you move through the recovery process.

When your shoulder is painful or movement is limited, the muscles around the shoulder may become guarded and tense. My approach focuses on working with those surrounding muscles and tissues while staying within your available range of motion.

Depending on your needs, your session may incorporate movement, myofascial release, or orthopedic cupping. Pressure and techniques are adjusted based on how your body responds, with the goal of helping you feel more comfortable and supported as you work toward easier movement.

How Massage Can Support You

What to Expect

Your session is personalized to what your body needs that day. We'll begin by talking about what you're experiencing, what movements are difficult or uncomfortable, and what you'd like to work on.

You don't have to lie face down if that position is uncomfortable or difficult for your shoulder. I often begin shoulder work with you face up, and when needed, I can position you on your side with supportive pillows. This allows us to work with the muscles around the back and shoulder while keeping you as comfortable as possible.

During your massage, I'll work with the muscles and tissues that may be contributing to tension and restricted movement, using techniques that are appropriate for your current range of motion. We'll adjust the approach throughout the session based on how your body responds.

The goal isn't to force movement. It's to create a supportive environment where your body can gradually become more comfortable with movement and you can better understand how it feels to move through your available range.

Why Midlife Can Be Different

Midlife can bring changes to the way your body feels and moves. During perimenopause and menopause, declining estrogen can influence inflammation and connective tissue, and researchers are continuing to explore how these changes may contribute to musculoskeletal conditions that become more common during this stage of life.

Frozen shoulder is one condition that has been associated with this stage of life. It involves inflammation and changes within the shoulder joint capsule that can lead to pain, stiffness, and restricted movement. While the connection between menopause and frozen shoulder is still being studied, the hormonal changes of midlife may be one piece of the puzzle.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Not every painful or stiff shoulder is frozen shoulder, and shoulder symptoms can have many different causes. If you're experiencing significant pain, a sudden change in shoulder function, or persistent or worsening symptoms, it's important to seek medical advice so the cause can be properly evaluated.

If you've already been diagnosed with frozen shoulder, massage can be one part of your overall support and recovery plan. I work within my scope as a massage therapist and can collaborate with your healthcare team when appropriate.

Not All Shoulder Pain is Frozen Shoulder

Not every painful or stiff shoulder is frozen shoulder. Shoulder symptoms can come from many different causes, and sometimes the exact reason for your pain or limited movement isn't immediately clear.

You don't need to have a frozen shoulder diagnosis to work with me. I also work with women experiencing shoulder pain, stiffness, muscular tension, and limited range of motion. Your session is tailored to what you're experiencing and what your body is able to do that day.

Through techniques such as myofascial release, movement, and orthopedic cupping when appropriate, I can work with the muscles and surrounding tissues that may be contributing to discomfort and restricted movement—while staying within my scope as a massage therapist.

Massage Support for Your Changing Body

At Sacred Harmony Massage, I specialize in working with women in midlife and understanding how the body can change during perimenopause, menopause, and beyond.

Your massage isn't a one-size-fits-all treatment. I consider what you're experiencing that day, how you're moving, and what your body needs most. Whether you're dealing with a diagnosed frozen shoulder, ongoing shoulder pain, stiffness, or limited range of motion, we'll create an approach that is appropriate for you.

Massage can be a valuable tool in your wellness toolkit to support your changing body. My goal is to help you feel more comfortable, more connected to your body, and better supported as you move through this stage of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can massage help with frozen shoulder?

Massage may be one part of supporting someone with frozen shoulder. Working with the muscles and surrounding tissues can help address muscular tension and guarding that may accompany painful or restricted movement. Massage does not change the joint capsule itself or replace medical care, physical therapy, or other treatment that may be recommended for frozen shoulder.

Do I need a frozen shoulder diagnosis to book?

No. You don't need a diagnosis to work with me. I also work with women experiencing shoulder pain, stiffness, muscular tension, or limited range of motion when the cause isn't known or hasn't been diagnosed. As a massage therapist, I don't diagnose the cause of your symptoms. My role is to work with the muscles and soft tissues based on what you're experiencing and what your body is able to do that day.

What stage of frozen shoulder can massage support?

Massage may be incorporated during different stages of frozen shoulder, but the approach will depend on what you're experiencing at the time. When a shoulder is highly painful or sensitive, the focus may be on gentle, comforting work rather than trying to increase movement. As pain and sensitivity change, the approach can change too.

I work within your available range of motion rather than forcing movement. If your shoulder is severely painful, your symptoms are changing significantly, or you haven't had the cause of your shoulder pain evaluated, medical advice may be appropriate before or alongside massage.

How often should I get massage for frozen shoulder?

There isn't one schedule that works for everyone. How often you may benefit from massage depends on your symptoms, your stage of recovery, your response to previous sessions, and what other care you're receiving. We'll discuss what makes sense for you based on your individual needs.

Can you work with shoulder pain that isn't frozen shoulder?

Yes. Frozen shoulder is only one possible reason for shoulder pain and restricted movement. I also work with women experiencing shoulder tension, stiffness, discomfort, and limited range of motion from other causes. If your symptoms suggest that medical evaluation would be appropriate, I'll encourage you to seek that care.
